A blemish is any type of mark, spot, discoloration, or flaw that appears on the skin. Common types of blemishes include:

Acne caused by an overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands that clogs pores with bacteria or dirt. This can cause pimples, blackheads and whiteheads which leaves dark spots, pockmarks, or scarring on the skin.

Hyperpigmentation caused by an overproduction of melanin which results in uneven skin tone or dark patches. Causes of hyperpigmentation can be sun exposure, acne scarring or hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation, is a skin condition that forms brown patches. It is very common during pregnancy and can be caused by sun exposure and hormonal changes.

In addition to acne, sun exposure, and hormones, Blemishes can also be caused by dairy, dietary issues, medications and skin inflammation such as eczema or psoriasis.  Don’t always be quick to blame the product.  Always assess yourself first when you see a change in your skin.

Treating blemishes and taking good care of your skin is all about being consistent and creating balance.  You need a routine that will balance thorough cleansing and unclogging pores with the right amount of hydration, along with soothing to target any blemishes and prevent further aggravation.
